FALCON Conference Information
Dear 1994 Land-grant Colleagues and FALCON members,
The First Americans Land-Grant Consortium (FALCON) is pleased to announce that registration is now open for its 18th Annual Conference, scheduled for October 21-24, 2022. This will be an IN-PERSON conference at the Hotel Albuquerque in Old Town, Albuquerque, New Mexico. Please register for the conference now.
As always, the conference will include sessions in 1994 land-grant teaching, extension programs and research that benefit Native American students, communities, governments, and lands. There will be a strong student focus and tribal college students are especially invited to participate and present their work. The conference will also include an USDA National Institute for Food and Agriculture (NIFA) update, as well training workshops and information-sharing and networking opportunities.
We are excited to announce two pre-conference workshops on Friday, October 21, 2022. First, “Building Tribal College/University Partnerships to Support Transportation Education & Research” will be an in-hotel workshop (9am-3pm with lunch provided). The purpose of the workshop is to gather faculty and administrators from TCUs together with University Transportation Center (UTC) representatives from across the nation to discuss partnership opportunities aimed at connecting Native American students to transportation research, higher education, and careers. Participation in this pre-conference workshop is free but requires your RSVP when you register.
A second pre-conference (mobile) workshop will feature Chef Leonard Bailey from Southwestern Indian Polytechnic Institute. “Cooking with Chef Bailey: The Importance of Indigenous Cuisine and how to make it relevant in a Modern World,” will be held on Friday, October 21, 2022, 1-4pm. Participation in this mobile workshop requires a $50 ticket when you register—this is a separate fee to attend the workshop.
We are also excited to announce a post-conference meeting on Monday, October 24, 2022. “Cultivating Food Sovereignty and Food Security with Native American Peoples Through Advanced Partnerships Among 1994 and 1862 Land-Grant Institutions,” is scheduled for 9am to 4pm at the conference hotel. This meeting is sponsored by NIFA and is designed to promote the engagement of faculty, staff, and students from 1994 and 1862 land-grant institutions who are working in areas of interest to Native American communities. There will be an emphasis on food-related topics and the longer-term goal is to pave the way toward exploration of an expanded array of subject matters that serve to bring land-grant universities together in working partnerships. The relationship of food and food systems to health, wealth, land, and culture makes it a natural entry point to these various other topics. Participation in this post-conference meeting requires a $50 ticket when you register. Hotel room costs for Sunday night will be covered to attend the post-conference meeting for the first 100 attendees including at least one representative from each 1994.
We are using Eventbrite for all conference registrations. Registration for the Saturday-Sunday conference is $375, with a one-day rate of $200. To register, click on: FALCON 2022 Registration.
